How has your health been during the holidays? I’ll bet you could you use some immunity boosters to help you start 2018 happy and healthy. I know that I’ve been paying special attention to my immunity this month. Why? Because of our daughters.
I don’t know about you, but I think the definition of children should include the fact that they’re carriers for just about every virus and bacteria in existence. Our youngest daughter Maddie, a senior at Washington State University, came home at Thanksgiving with a nasty cold. Then she came home for Christmas healthy (YAY!) and came down with a nasty cold on Christmas day (BOO!). Luckily she hasn’t shared her germs with me or my husband. I’m pretty sure that some of my yogi and ayurvedic daily habits help keep my immunity strong, so I thought I’d share them with you. Here’s what I do that works for me.
Thieves essential oil is a powerful combination of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary essential oils for an aromatic blend that fills any space with a rich, spicy aroma and has anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. Thieves is supposedly inspired by the legend of four 15th-century French thieves who formulated a special aromatic combination composed of clove, rosemary, and other botanicals to protect themselves while robbing the dead and dying. Kind of creepy, but it works!
Thieves is the only cleaner I use in my home, for everything from kitchen and bathroom counters to floors and mirrors. I also diffuse it in all areas of my home (especially when college kids are visiting) and put several drops into a hot bath. I regularly use it in my toothpaste, hand soap and laundry detergent. I really love putting two drops of Thieves Vitality (formulated to be ingested) into my tea every morning. You can get an idea of the multitude of uses for Thieves in your home here.

Epsom salts calm your nervous system, alleviates sore muscles, and support our body’s ability to repair itself. It has even been reported to help get rid of headaches. I take a bath, adding one cup of epsom salts and 1/2 cup of baking soda, plus eight drops of Thieves essential oil every evening in cold weather. The baking soda detoxes the body, improves circulation, combats skin irritation, and leaves skin feeling silky smooth. I generally purchase Sky Organics Epsom Salts.
Also known as “holy basil,” tulsi is a sacred plant from India, believed to be so beneficial and purifying for its surroundings that it is often kept in houses and courtyards to ward off diseases and bad fortune. Highly sattvic, tulsi has excellent benefits for the heart, mind, and lungs, clearing kapha from the upper respiratory tract and promoting clear, comfortable breathing. When combined with the warming and kapha reducing qualities of ginger, the synergistic effects of these potent herbs provide a boost to the immune system. I like to drink tulsi and ginger tea especially in the colder months. I feel that it really helps keep my respiratory system strong and healthy. I like the Organic India brand. Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. It would be very difficult to reach therapeutic levels by just using the turmeric spice in your foods. Therefore, if you want to experience the full effects, then you need to take an extract that contains significant amounts of curcumin. I take a curcumin supplement every day to take advantage of its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant rich benefits. It has also been proven to improve brain function, reduce heart disease, help prevent various cancers, helps in the prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease, helps alleviate joint pain, shows benefits to fight depression and age-related diseases. In fact, I used to take a lot of pain relievers due to a broken wrist but have been able to give all those up with the addition of curcumin to my daily routine.
Biochavan is considered to be one of the most valuable “rejuvenatory” herbal dietary supplements in Ayurveda. Often referred to as chyawanprash, it has been used for thousands of years to promote health and longevity, boosting metabolism, strenth, and energy. The basis of Biochavan is the Amalaki fruit. Rich in antioxidants, it has been scientifically proven to have measurable health enhancing benefits including detoxification, improved digestive functioning, and increased immunity.
